Position: American Red Cross, Ft. Kearney Chapter  
Location: South Central Nebraska

Position Description:

Areas for serving include:

Assuming responsibility for working with staff on volunteer recruitment for the 12 county areas, helping to market Health and Safety Program and assist in establishing community classes in the counties surrounding Kearney. 

 Dependent on the Member's skills and interests, some opportunities exist to assist with educational programming related to health, nutrition, environmental issues, etc.   Training will be offered for serving as presenters on community Disaster Education, Fire Responders, and possibly Health and Safety instruction.

In the 12 County Area, AC Members will ,,,
• Work to identify potential partnerships and discover additional  resourcesin the 12 county area
• Work with staff on volunteer recruitment for the 12 county areas.
• Work with county officials, volunteer fire department, others ervice and humanitarian organizations.
• Assist with raising awareness of Red Cross’ community courses, Health and Safety Courses
• Assist in identifying gaps in service delivery and work with staff to develop plans to close these gaps.

Position: Arc of Buffalo County

Annual Stipend: $2,000.00  
Position Description:

The Arc of Buffalo County will train the AmeriCorps member to help implement recreational and leisure opportunities for children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities of all ages.  Activities include various group activities such as arts and crafts, respite events, youth events, swimming, dancing, family gatherings, etc.  

 

              AC Members will also help plan and implement programs that help to meet the needs of families, whose children have developmental disabilities. The Arc creates a nurturing environment with a small staff.  Adding an AmeriCorps member greatly improves overall services and the quality of programming. We are confident that the AmeriCorps member will also grow personally and professionally as they enjoy working with families and individuals with developmental disabilities.

 

 

The AmeriCorps Member will…

  • assist the Arc directors with volunteer recruitment at UNK and area high schools and serve as mentors.  Attend and assist at Volunteer Orientations
  • supervise and interact with participants and volunteers
  • provide one-on-one recreational assistance in community outings for youth or adults  
  • assist with designing flyers, preparing maps, the Arc newsletter, data collection and
  • implement recreational or leisure programs hosted or supported by The Arc of Buffalo County. These might include: Sibshops, direct respite for families, parent trainings, local Parent Support Group meetings and socials, Family fun Nights at the YMCA, and other family centered  activities. Members will serve as the point staff for the Buddy Bowling program
  • help implement programs that directly impact families with children with disabilities
  • help with computer tasks such as record keeping and preparing Arc newsletters or flyers for special events in the Arc office

Position: Audubon Rowe Sanctuary  
Location: Gibbon (Rural)  
Position Type: 1 Half-time Position (900hrs; $2, 775.00 Ed Award)  
Annual Stipend: $5,500.00  
Position Description:

The AmeriCorps Member serving at the Audubon Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon will serve as a Resource Mobilization Specialist. Housing will be provided on-site at the Sanctuary, if desired.

 

The Rowe Sanctuary is located directly on the Platte River, where millions of ducks and geese and over 500,000 Sandhill Cranes stage during their annual migrations. Over 70 local and out-of-state volunteers help meet the Rowe’s mission. AC Members will serve as role models in promoting volunteerism and will work to recruit, train and mentor volunteers.

 

The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for numerous tasks including:

• Assisting Rowe Sanctuary in their attempts to build relationships among individuals of other cultures in communities of Nebraska.
•  Working with coordination of Service-Learning and Research students from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and/or Hastings College
•  Preparing and conducting school, youth, family and adult programming
•  Helping recruit new volunteers and participate in volunteer meetings
•  Assisting in planning and implementing day-to-day and special events

Position Description:
AmeriCorps Member working with the Habitat Program will receive training
and be provided opportunities to build skills and knowledge about the Habitat
program, receive professional development training in various aspects of the
organization and learn about the people being served.
 
 
 Members will develop:
• Skills in serving those in need with housing
• A sense of pride in serving others
• An understanding of the need for volunteering
• An awareness of procedures for securing a home through Habitat

• Help tutor children and/or adults of Habitat families

Position: Kearney Community Learning Center - After School Aide

Position Description:

5 AmeriCorps Member positions will provide service to children struggling in the classrooms.


 

This After School Program serves students, predominately from low-income families and/or disadvantaged circumstances, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, 5 days a week from 3-6pm.  AC Members provide one-on-one education and social needs of the at-risk students that attend the Program.

 

 

Members will receive training in CPR, First Aid, playground safety, Literacy, and serving as a Para.

 

                                              Eighty plus students from the UNK Teacher Education program provide 1200 hours of service annually at the Center’s sites, which are hosted at 5 elementary schools in Kearney. AmeriCorps Members will also help provide leadership and encouragement for these students.

 

 

 
 
 

Members duties will include: 

·      Help to  tutoring and mentor at-risk students

·      Serve as companions in direct service to the elementary students

·      Actively search out community needs in which children could serve others

·      Create and lead service-learning projects identified from these needs

·      Help to foster volunteerism in our students

·      Make the community aware of the need for volunteering and help them get involved in the process.

Position: Mount Carmel Care Home

Position Description:
The AmeriCorps member serving at the Mount Carmel Home will help to expand the services provided to the Elders living in the Home by recruiting additional volunteers from the campus and the community to serve. 
 
Mount Carmel provides daily activities to engage and enrich the lives of the residents living in the facility and strives to bring variety and spontaneity into their lives.
 

The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for numerous tasks including:

 

Assisting in the recruitment and  mentoring of new volunteers  

  • Participating in volunteer meetings
  • Building relationships with the Elders, learning about their lives and stories
  • Helping to plan and implement day-to-day activities and special events
  • Working to coordinate UNK Service-Learning and volunteer students

Position: Museum Collaborative  
Location: Kearney (City)

Position Description:
The AmeriCorps member will be involved in resource mobilization, assist with development of exhibits, and help plan and implement events at the  Nebraska Firefighters Museum; Kearney Area
Children's Museum, and the Trails and Rails Museum.
 
Each museum operates independently, however the Directors work together collaboratively to provide excellent learning opportunities for children and adults in the community and other visitors.
 
Major projects with which the Member will be involved include:
 • Planning, assisting and conducting educational programs and tours for various events at the museum sites
• Member will take ownership of a variety of personal projects and programs that play to their individual talents and strengths in order to enhance the mission and offerings of each of the Museums
• Be responsible for maintaining a variety of Service-Learning opportunities connected to the University, utilizing the appropriate volunteer management system
• Help rotate displays; assist with community awareness, publicity, social media, marketing, etc; recruit, manage, train, volunteers; and work in customer service
• Receive training in a professional and up-to-standards method to accession and organization of artifacts donated to the Museums

Position: United Way of the Kearney Area-Volunteer Solutions

Position Description:
Work in Kearney to discover volunteer opportunities and connect agencies/organizations/schools to the United Way. This Member will be responsible for ensuring that all existing service organizations within Kearney are contacted and assisted in registering service opportunities in the Volunteer Solutions database.
 

The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for numerous tasks including:

  • Administering and managing updates  on United Way’s Volunteer Solutions
  • Collecting volunteer opportunities from various agencies in Kearney and area communities.
  • Monitoring the database and recruiting volunteer matches for the posted opportunities
  • Marketing Volunteer Solutions via radio, newspapers, television and Internet
  • Attending/participating in regular AmeriCorps Rural Corps meetings and trainings
  • Other duties as assigned

The Frank House is a historic home on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Kearney.  Our mission is to preserve and share its historic and aesthetic value and cultural resources.

Position Description:

The Office for Service-Learning is seeking a motivated person to serve approximately 12-14 hours/week in furthering the integration of campus and community through service-learning. This member will work under the direction of the Director of the Office for Service-Learning, 

 

 Members will:

  • be trained to assist in providing information to UNK faculty, community partners and students in the use of a new database tool, OrgSnyc, just being introduced to the campus and community.
  • assist in connecting and encouraging service-learning for co-curricular student groups
  • utitlize  existing networks with local schools as applicable to encourage the development of service-learning at K-12 schools
  • work cooperatively as members of the AmeriCorps Team to complete tasks
  • assist the Director of the Office for Service-Learning with Member trainings and serve as leaders for other events in which Members serve the community as a TEAM
  • accomplish other tasks as assigned

Position: UNK-Zion Physical Activity and Education Partnership

Position Description:
The AmeriCorps member will add to and expand the existing partnership between UNK and Zion Lutheran School in two ways. First, the AmeriCorps member will help to enhance the quality of physical education UNK currently provides to the students of Zion Lutheran School through a class of students. Secondly, the member will begin the development of an after school activity program that will help to promote healthier more active lifestyles
 

The AmeriCorps Member serving in this position will be involved in the following:

  • Supervising of UNK teacher candidates leading PE activities at Zion
  • Organization and administration of equipment associated with activities
  • Identification of schools physical activity needs and implementation of programs to help meet those needs.
  • Organization and development of after or before school and physical activities
  • Recruitment of interested individuals to help in physical activity programs  being developed
